Girls’Day in Berlin – 25. April 2013

Cisco and Telekom trainees working together for a successful future of the girls

For the sixth time in a row female students of the “Integrierten Sekundarschule Wolfgang Borchert“ school  from Berlin-Spandau came to the Cisco Office in Berlin to find out more about jobs and the work environment in the IT sector.  The Girls’ Day at Cisco started with a TelePresence Demo which was very interesting for the girls – everyone knows about Skype – but the girls directly wanted to know how much it would cost to have such a technology at home…

Carsten Johnson, who organized the Girls’ Day, welcomed the visitors. Before that they had a tour through a server room led by Thomas Gerneth.  Director transformational and Enterprise Accounts and also the father of two girls, Uwe Peter presented the company and explained the importance of that day and their future career choice to the girls. Afterwards Evelyn Feldhoff, Account Manager, demonstrated how the Internet works. This started with a little movie

Finally the girls had various workshops with trainees of Deutsche Telekom discussing subjects as “security in the Internet” or “cyber-bullying”.  Taking apart computers and putting them back together as well as practicing job interviews concluded the day.

The students enjoyed their day and showed their interest to sign up for internships at Cisco and Deutsche Telekom.
The Girls’ Day was a lot of fun this year and we’re looking forward to the next year.

NetAcad Italy visits Vienna

Visit of a NetAcad student group from the Landesberufsschule Brixen in Cisco Office Vienna

On 22nd of April a NetAcad student group from Landesberufsschule Brixen, a very old and very active Networking Academy from Italy, came for a visit to the Cisco Office in Vienna. We are proud of this long lasting relationship between Italy and Austria and the exemplary cross country collaboration. August Sarkany, Product Sales Specialist Collaboration took the responsibility to introduce them to Cisco as a Company, Cisco Technologies and Certifications. Tomorrow starts here and the Internet of Everything was the starting and ending point for the interactive discussions about the topics

  • Connected Devices and applications (Smart metering)
  • Smartphones
  • Copyright
  • Facebook / Skype

The importance of Certification was highlighted by

  • showing career paths
  • personal Certification
  • Introduction to CCNA
  • Differentiation on the Job Markt
  • personal experience

The student group initiated and organized their visit on their own without the support of a teacher. Great Spirit … LINKS LBS http://www.tschuggmall.berufsschule.it Cisco Commercial | Tomorrow Starts Here (60) Cisco Employees Wake Up the World | Tomorrow Starts Here

Cross Border Collaboration Italy & Switzerland

Together with Luca Lepore, Program Manager Networking Academy Italy, we visited the SSIG in Bellinzona , in personal Roberto, the LMC – academy contact and CCNA instructor and Adriano, responsible for Continued Education.

I enjoyed meeting the 3rd largest and only Networking Academy in Ticino, the Italian part of Switzerland, using the change to actively work in cross-country collaboration.

Discussed topics:
Move to the new learning platform NetSpace, the new coming CCNA 5.0  curriculum and how the existing courses can be mapped into it, decreasing student numbers.

Strategic possibilities opening up with the new CCNA curriculum:
The new coming CCNA curricula is open and flexible for being used in a modular way, making it possible to use only modules instead of the entire curriculum.

  • Vocational Schools do have comprehensive IT curricula where not much time is dedicated to Networking and Systems
  • The new CCNA 5.0 allows Vocational Schools to use only the modules they need and have time for
  • They can become part of the Networking Academy

AND they are the supply chain for new students into Higher Education – 90% of the students at the SSIG come from Vocational Schools.

This idea was welcomed with interest. Looking forward to this strategic cooperation idea along the education value chain will be adopted.
